Singing in the Rain

Malcolm Heyhoe, Paul Hunter
Liquorice #4

cover story..Of all the people we've seen this year, one of them, means more to us than any of the others. John Martyn; and his inclusion in Liquorice is both timely and essential. John's music is highly cathartic, and deeply emotive. His personal 'philosophy' of love as the only answer is manifested in a quite remarkable fashion within his superb songs. And coupled with this is his seemingly inborn dislike and mistrust of the music business and its nefarious activities.

Natural Martyn

SEAGULLS are soaring on the rising air currents from the sea. Sparrows and yellowhammers are chirruping in the undergrowth. The sun beats down. And John Martyn walks beside the sheer white cliffs at Hastings, where he lives.

John Martyn: A fingerpicking Brityn

Dan Hedges
Guitar Player Vol 9 #5

As a guitarist, Glasgow-born John Martyn is undeniably one of the finest in Britain. As a guitar innovator, he's one of the very few. Having embarked on a recording career at the ripe old age of eighteen (with London Conversation), he's since recorded seven albums in as many years (including Stormbringer! [Island, ILPS 9113], with his wife, Beverley), the latest of which, Sunday's Child [Island, ILPS 9296], was released last December.

A Refusal To Sell Out

Even though John Martyn has been around for some time now, there's still a boyishness in his laughter and a distinct lack of Rock-Star-Cool in his behaviour. His new album -his eighth- has an appropriate title, Sunday's Child.

Life After Dark

Jerry Gilbert
Sounds

His newly released album Sunday's Child follows a familiar formula - it's an album of mood music that only comes to life after dark so that one immediately recalls his penchant for booking studio time at Island between the hours of midnight and dawn.

Whose music is his life and whose life is a process of learning

"Music makes my heart go, makes me tick. The money doesn't really matter, if it didn't come in I would still go on playing, singing away. I'm just in love with music. That's me."

Inside John Martyn

Dave Pyke
Guitar vol 2 #4

To those critics who demand pigeon-holes, John Martyn is a 'folk guitarist'. He plays mostly acoustic guitars and sings songs. And makes remarkable records, using jazz musicians, African drummers and anyone else he thinks appropriate. His latest (and seventh) album, Inside Out, has just been released by Island. Before that was Solid Air, which is one of Dave Dyke's favourite records. So we asked Dave to talk to John for Guitar.
