John Martyn: On The Cobbles

De Schotse bard John Martyn was tijdgenoot en vriend van de betreurde Drake¹ en komt na moeizame jaren, waarin een onderbeen werd geamputeerd, op zijn 22ste solo-album weer ijzersterk voor de dag. Zijn diepe stem klinkt nog altijd even soulvol. En de arrangementen zijn als vanouds folky maar doorspekt met een flinke portie jazz en funk.
Martyn klinkt opnieuw als de dolende kluizenaar. Soms schreeuwend, meestal fluisterend, en altijd komt zijn stem diep vanuit het hart. In veel opzichten is zijn werk vergelijkbaar met dat van Van Morrison: ook Martyn maakt al decennia hetzelfde soort albums die alleen nog verwijzen naar het eigen werk. Martyn heeft net als Morrison een genre op zichzelf geschapen en On The Cobbles is een van de betere platen daarin, misschien wel zijn beste sinds Sapphire van twintig jaar geleden.

The Scottish singer John Martyn was a contemporary and friend of the sadly departed Drake¹ and makes a strong re-entry with his 22nd solo-album after hard years, during which a lower leg was amputated. His deep voice still sounds full of soul. And the arrangements are folky like before but infused with a strong portion of jazz and funk.
Again, Martyn sounds like the wandering hermit. Sometimes hollering, mostly whispering, and always his voice comes deep from the heart. In many ways his work might be compared to that of Van Morrison; Martyn, too, has been making a similar kind of albums for decades, albums that only refer to the own work. Just like Morrison, Martyn created a genre in itself and On The Cobbles is one of the better albums in this, maybe his best since Sapphire twenty years ago.
