11th September 1948: Born Iain David McGeachy in New Malden, Surrey    
    1966: Relocates from Glasgow to London
1967: Records debut album London Conversation with Theo Johnson producing    
    December 1968. Second album, The Tumbler, is released
February 1970: Stormbringer, first album with new wife, Beverley, recorded at Woodstock, is released    
    November 1970. The Road To Ruin is released
November 1971: Bless The Weather is released    
    November 1972: Single release of May You Never
February 1973: Solid Air released    
    13th February 1975: Gig at Leeds University recorded, becomes the album Live At Leeds
19th March 1976: close friend and recent guitarist Paul Kossoff dies. Martyn, already shaken by death of friend Nick Drake, takes extended break.    
    May 1977: After rest and recuperation in Jamaica, Martyn begins recording One World at Chris Blackwell's farm in Berkshire
November 1977: One World is released    
    November 1980: Working with Genesis drummer, Phil Collins, releases Grace and Danger
1981: Signs with Warner Brothers for commercially high-aiming Glorious Fool, its title track an attack on then-US President Ronald Reagan    
    1981: Divorces Beverley Martyn
1984: Returns to Island Records and releases Sapphire    
    1986: Piece By Piece album and 20th Anniversary tour
3rd March 1986: 20th anniversary show at London Palladium    
    April 1990: Releases The Apprentice on Permanent Records, supports it with residency at The Shaw Theatre in London's Euston Road
September 1991: Releases Cooltide    
    July 1996: And released on Go!Discs
May 2000: First studio album of new material in four years, Glasgow Walker, released    
    May 2001: Reunion tour with Danny Thompson
2002: Seriously infected foot and subsequent car crash sees all live dates cancelled    
    April 2003: Hospitalization and subsequent leg amputation
28th May 2004: BBC Documentary Johnny Too Bad transmitted    
    Feb 2008: wins Lifetime Achievement Award at BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards
June 2008: Wins the Les Paul Award at the MOJO Awards    
    September 2008: 60th Birthday and Ain't No Saint box set released
November 2008: Completes recording Willing To Work    
    29th January 2009: John Martyn dies in Ireland
