Host: Neben mir, John Martyn...
JM: Hi...
H: Not from England, from Scotland...
JM: Scotland, Scotland.
H: Die Schotten legen ja immer sehr viel Wert darauf daß man also 'Schotland' sagt und nicht 'England', it's very important that we always have to say 'Scotland' instead of...
John, in Glasgow geboren, aufgewachsen Ende der sechziger Jahre, sixty-eight, you started with folk music, hast du mit Folkmusik begonnen. Dann, in the mid seventies, Mitte der siebziger, bist du umgestiegen auf Rock. Warum, why?
JM: O, because I got bored, really, playing dear little audiences and playing acoustic guitar. I got more sustain out of playing electric. Just more sustain.

You don't describe situations, you talk and sing about feelings. I think it must be very hard to tell people about the feelings. Isn't it very hard?
JM: It's difficult sometimes to be naked, but I look on it as a diary. A diary.

JM: [starts laughing] Yes it was!
H: You understood...
JM: Just a little depressive, yes. That was the divorce album. That was the waving goodbye album.
H: Waving goodbye to what? Warum auf Wiedersehen?
JM: Exactly. - To the wife.

H: To the wife... I thought Marvin Gaye did a similar one.
You understood it?
JM: No! [laughing]
H: OK, I'll translate it. I just said that after such a long time, and thirteen to fourteen albums, I can't remember the proper number of it...
JM: Fourteen.
H: Thanks for correcting me. John, the real breakthrough didn't happen. Why? Have you got any clue about that?
JM: Pooh... The music that I make is really... it lies between popular music and jazz, I suppose. It has a minority kind of feel to it, you know. It's not acceptable, I don't follow fashion. I'm not really keen on fashion; I like style, but I don't like fashion.
Thanks very much, John, you look very...
JM: What?..
H: Wet...
JM: And sweet and tidy...
